Enabling independence: a collaboration between OpeninterX, Bristol University and St Monica Trust
At St Monica Trust, we are always looking for ways to help support independence and recently we welcomed OpenInterX and Bristol University to Cote Lane for a workshop exploring their exciting product, LUCI, a new wearable personal assistant that could help people with an array of needs such as dementia, visual impairment, or perhaps those who may just benefit from a personal assistant giving them important reminders through their day.

What is LUCI?
LUCI is a small, wearable personal assistant that can assess what is in front of it to help inform how it assists you. For instance, it could read something written on a notice board and give you advice about it or it could remind you how to undertake a specific task.
Workshop Output
We had insightful discussions about practical considerations including privacy, battery life, connectivity, and ease of use. A key focus was ensuring that LUCI feels like a supportive and useful tool for residents. In all, the representative from OpenInterX gained valuable insights from potential users to help refine and enhance LUCI’s features and functionality.

Next Steps – three potential trials at St Monica Trust
Following the workshop, participants – including colleagues and residents expressed enthusiasm in moving forward with trials focused on dementia support, personal assistance, and visual impairment. The Centre of Innovation at the Trust will collaborate with OpenInterX to ensure these initiatives progress to further trials and development.
Don’t Forget
We are at the start of our journey to introduce exciting products into the Trust, to enhance connection, contribution, and choice for our residents. However, there is still more to be done. If you’re interested in joining the LUCI trials or participating in other trials, please reach out to the Centre of Innovation, and we will ensure you are part of this journey.
