Signpost 62 (12 July)
We are in the middle of a very British summer that has a quirky balance of sunny intervals alongside the rain and wind! We hope this weeks’ Signpost will keep you entertained during the rainy periods and gives you some inspiration for when the weather is better.
During this week in:
1955: Ruth Ellis became the last woman in England to be executed
1985: The Live Aid concert raised over ÂŁ30m globally
2014: The Church of England General Synod approved female bishops
REFLECT
- The Right Reverend Libby Lane was the first female bishop in England. Initially Bishop of Stockport and now Bishop of Derby, Bishop Libby produced this prayer and reflection for the national day of reflection on March 23rd.
CONNECT
- Opera Today is a website focussing exclusively on opera news, commentary and reviews from around the world. You can catch up on news from the Royal Opera House, reviews of current performances like the Grange Festival’s Midsummer Night’s Dream or interesting articles connected to the world of opera, such as the news of a new photographic exhibit at Glyndebourne Opera House.
LEARN
- While many of us still can’t get away, you can enjoy some of the world’s most extraordinary hotels by watching “Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond the Lobby” with Giles Coren and Monica Galetti on BBC iPlayer.
- The Live Aid concert took place 36 years ago and has established itself as a key element of popular culture. Rolling Stone Magazine have this fantastic article entitled “Live Aid 1985: The Day the World Rocked and The Independent cover the chaos behind the cameras.
- In June, BBC One showed a documentary Bristol and what happened with the statue of Edward Colston here. The show, called “Statue Wars: One Summer In Bristol” can be viewed here.
DO
- As the weather gets better and we can get out more, why not go for a picnic. Whether in the countryside, at a park or even on your own living room floor; Jamie Oliver can help you make the perfect picnic and has even more picnic recipes to try here.
FUN
- Although Wimbledon is now over, the BBC has a very lovely article about what it's like to be a ball boy or ball girl.
