Signpost 17 (10 August)
Welcome back
What wonderful weather we have been having recently! But if you aren’t out sunbathing or it's started raining by the time this email arrives... you might enjoy this week's Signpost with suggestions, links and activities to suit all tastes.
This week we look at spirituality, fitness through the ages as well as some very entertaining pets!
REFLECT
- When a time of crisis appears, people look for a sense of connection to something higher than themselves. This article, The Science of Spirituality, looks at the relationship between science and spirituality and provides tips on building your spiritual practice.
CONNECT
- Wise Children is a Bristol-based theatre company that would usually be producing ground-breaking work with exceptional artists and touring it across the UK. During lockdown, Wise Children’s founder Emma Rice has been producing a twice-weekly podcast called Tea and Biscuits, where she sits down for (virtual) tea and biscuits with a range of artists, musicians, actors and producers. You can listen to these recordings here and listen to the first episode here.
LEARN
- The British Red Cross is celebrating its 150th anniversary in August and to commemorate this they have launched a 'digital museum'. The 150 Voices online exhibition shares the incredible history of The British Red Cross by telling the stories of 150 objects from their archives. Highlights from exhibition include an introduction from HRH Prince Charles, a letter from Florence Nightingale, an ambulance shaped collection box and a feeding cup used on a hospital train during the Boer war.
DO
- What do you do to keep fit? British Film Institute has a brilliant selection of films from over the last 100 years here. The inspiring videos include female cyclists from 1929, cycling across the channel and even haggis hurling.
INFORM
- The website Information is Beautiful provides facts, figures and information in a clear and beautiful way. Explore the myths and misconceptions around coronavirus here or daily beautiful news here.
FUN
- Over the years, the internet has offered a huge range of information and resource across the world. One wacky phenomenon that has endured is people sharing funny videos of their pets online. When things feel stressful and you need to smile, then try funniest dogs and cats, cute and funny cats or guilty dogs!
